Safe Environment All children, young people, and vulnerable adults have the right to be safe and protected from harm in all environments. St. Mary's Church follows all policies set forth by the Diocese of Syracuse that embraces this right and promotes that protection by taking steps to create safe environments to prevent the sexual abuse of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. We will continue to take steps to create safe environments through continued education, building awareness, and maintaining a commitment to keeping all children, young people, and vulnerable adults safe. Safe Environment Training All diocesan, parish, and school employees and volunteers working with children, young people, or vulnerable adults must attend initial safe environment training, and subsequent re-certification every 5 years. On regular occasion, St. Mary's hosts sessions of each training for convenience of staff and parishioners. Check the registration schedule to find a time and location that is convenient for you. If you have any questions, contact Amy Casper , Safe Environment Coordinator for St. Mary's. Initial Training "Protecting God's Children (PGC)" Pre-registration is required. All clergy All members of religious orders All parish and diocesan employees, including those who have no contact with children All volunteers whose ministry or role places them in regular contact with children, young people, or vulnerable adults Completion of a first-time Safe Environment PGC training session is required within 60 days of assumption of duties, employment, or volunteering per diocesan policy. To complete the screening, participants must pass a criminal background check. Re-certification Training "Entrusted to Protect, Dedicated to Restore" Pre-registration is required. The diocesan Child and Youth Protection Policy requires Safe Environment re-certification training (1.5 hour session) every five (5) years for: All clergy All members of religious orders All parish and diocesan employees, including those who have no contact with children All volunteers whose ministry or role places them in regular contact with children, young people, or vulnerable adults In addition to the re-certification session, all participants must pass a new criminal background check in order to complete their Safe Environment re-certification screening. Training for Children & Youth Circles of Care is a new educational program tailored to our parish catechetical programs. This curriculum originally developed by the Diocese of Manchester has been adapted by the Diocese of Syracuse to address age-appropriate personal safety issues for children and youth in the context of Catholic moral teaching. Funeral Pre-Planning Form St. Mary's now offers the option to create a funeral pre-plan online! A funeral pre-plan is an excellent way to make advanced selections of the details for your own or your loved one's funeral service and to have a record of those selections kept on file at the St. Mary's Parish Office. To create a funeral pre-plan, complete a funeral pre-plan form below, and upon submitting the completed form, a copy will be emailed immediately to the person who completed the form, with a copy also emailed to St. Mary's Parish Office, where it will be kept on file.

Liturgical Ministries Bereavement Support Ministry Our Bereavement Support Ministry tries to be the compassionate heart and hands of our Lord Jesus. No one can really feel or remove another's pain, but everyone can walk beside and support another who is sorrowful. Those involved in our Bereavement Ministry find that in supporting others, our own faith is nourished and deepened. Volunteers are asked to attend funeral Masses held at St. Mary's to offer support to the family and friends of the deceased. We ask you to prayerfully consider this wonderful ministry. This ministry does not require special training, and the time commitment is one hour on an as-needed basis. Funeral Preparation Team The work done by the volunteers on our Funeral Preparation Team is highly valued by all involved. This ministry requires individuals who are good listeners, are patient, and who can exhibit compassion with those experiencing loss. Members of our Funeral Preparation Team meet with the family members of the deceased to plan the funeral liturgy, perform a brief prayer service during the calling hours if necessary, assist with Funeral liturgy preparation/set up, and attend the Funeral Mass as support to the family. Training is offered for volunteers who wish to join this ministry. Training takes approximately 2-3 hours. Volunteers do not need experience in this role, however they should have good listening skills, compassion, and the ability to lead prayers in a private environment. The time commitment for a Funeral Team member for one Funeral Liturgy is approximately 8 hours over the course of 3-5 days, depending on the needs of the family. Funeral Reception Team T his ministry provides receptions following a Funeral Liturgy for the family and friends of the deceased. Volunteers for this ministry can help in several capacities: Providing food for the reception (typically breakfast, lunch, or snack foods) Assist with set up or clean up (2 hour commitment each; 4 hours if you choose to do both) Assist with serving food at the reception Training for this ministry is provided and takes about 1-2 hours.

Liturgical Ministries Greeters Greeters are the first people we meet when entering our church for Mass. A friendly smile and a warm hello help create a place of welcome. Greeters should arrive at the weekend liturgies 20 minutes early and stand at the church entrances to greet parishioners and guests and hand out the weekly bulletin. At the conclusion of Mass, they will again stand at the entrances to distribute the weekly bulletin as the assembly leaves the church. Greeters are scheduled for their chosen Mass time every 3-6 weeks. Training is provided. Lectors Lectors proclaim scripture readings from the lectionary at weekend and special liturgies. The ministry of a lector is to help make the readings come alive for the congregation. A training session is required for first time ministers of the parish. Lectors are scheduled approximately once every 3-6 weeks at their desired Mass time. If you love to read or have been told you have a clear speaking voice, please consider becoming a lector. Eucharistic Ministers Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Eucharistic Ministers) serve our parish community by distributing Holy Communion at weekend and special liturgies. A training session is required for first-time ministers of the parish. Re-training sessions are also available for ministers who would like a refresher. Ministers are scheduled approximately once every four weeks (or more often if they choose) at the Mass of their choice. Eucharistic Ministers must be fully initiated (c onfirmed) in the Catholic faith. Eucharistic Ministers must also dress appropriately. (No flip flops, jeans, or shorts. Women may wear sandals, but they must be make sure they can go up and down the Sanctuary steps safely. Gentlemen should wear a dress shirt with dress pants or dress Dockers. Women should wear a blouse and skirt or slacks, or a dress. The length of the skirt or dress should be appropriate for church. Ushers Ushers assist at Mass in welcoming and seating people. They are also responsible for taking up the collection and asking a family to bring up the gifts at communion if someone is not already signed up. Ushers are scheduled for their desired Mass time approximately 2 times per month, or more if they so choose. Sacristans Sacristans are appointed by the Pastor to assist with set up for weekend Masses.
