Governing Bodies St. Mary's has three consultative bodies that serve to advise the pastor about pastoral issues. Their main purposes are to investigate, reflect, and research conclusions about pastoral matters to recommend to the pastor as appropriate. Members of these committees/councils are appointed by the pastor. Pastoral Council The purpose of the Pastoral Council is to identify the spiritual and temporal needs of the parish community and to encourage members of the parish community to participate in the life of the parish. As a council, the members are responsible for the needs of the Universal Church as well as those of the parish. The members, in consultation with the pastor, staff, and ministerial committees, discuss, research, and through consensus, recommend the direction which the parish should take in matters of the church. The membership consists of both, selected and non-selected members. All members are involved with parish activities and make a commitment to offering a talent or skill to council ministry. Selected members of the Pastoral Council must be confirmed, registered Catholic members of the parish, in good standing. Each member shall serve a three (3) year term. CURRENT PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBERS (until March 2, 2026) Officers: Mark Rossler, Chair Sharon Stack, Vice-Chair Katy Rossler, Secretary Selected Members: Aaron Gloo Kevin Newman Bill McManus Donna Newman Elsie Petersen Marilyn Powell Appointed Member: Sr. Marcia Barry Ex Officio Members: Bishop Douglas Lucia, Pastor Fr. Ben Schrantz, Vicar Deacon Joseph Casper Renée Romance, Trustee Dr. John O'Brien, Trustee Amy Casper, Finance Committee Chair If you're interested in serving on the 2025 Pastoral Council, please click here for more details . Finance Committee The Finance Committee serves the pastor in an advisory capacity for all financial matters pertaining to the parish. These include: preparation and review of annual operating budgets, short and long-term business plans, capital expenditures, and investment programs and policies. Members of this committee are appointed by the pastor. Appointed members should have background/experience in finance and/or business. Ideally, one member should have a legal background. Liturgy Committee Mass doesn't just happen - it takes planning. The Liturgy Committee plans and coordinates our liturgies throughout the year. The Liturgy Committee is comprised of the pastor, representatives from each liturgical ministry, the director of music ministry, a staff representative, and representatives from certain support ministries. Members of this committee are appointed by the pastor.

Sacraments Baptism Congratulations on the birth of your child! We are honored that you have chosen St. Mary's for this important sacrament in your child's life. Before celebrating your child’s baptism, there are a few items that will need your attention. Please contact the Parish Office to select a date and time for your child's baptism. If you have not yet registered with the parish, please do so. Church law allows a pastor to baptize only those who are registered parishioners of a parish. If you are returning to St. Mary’s to celebrate with family here, we will need a letter from your pastor giving permission for your child to be baptized at St. Mary’s. It is a requirement that you attend a Pre-Baptism Class here or at your parish. Again, a certificate of attendance is needed if you attend the class elsewhere. Baptism classes are offered on the first Monday of each month at 7:00pm. To register for a Pre-Baptism Class here at St. Mary's, please contact the Parish Office at 315-635-5762. It is customary that the child have a godfather and a godmother. At least one of these individuals must be a fully initiated (confirmed), practicing Catholic. They will need to supply a Certificate of Sponsorship from their pastor before the celebration of the baptism. Learn more about the Sacrament of Baptism by watching Reborn on FORMED. For information on non-infant baptisms, please refer to our RCIA page for adults and children.

First Reconciliation First Reconciliation Receiving Forgiveness for Our Sins The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the most unique and beautiful aspects of Catholicism. Jesus Christ, in His abundant love and mercy, established the Sacrament of Confession, so that we as sinners can obtain forgiveness for our sins and reconcile with God and the Church. The sacrament “washes us clean,” and renews us in Christ. Click here to view the confession schedule . First Eucharist First Eucharist Receiving the True Body and Blood of Jesus Christ The Eucharist is the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, who is really and substantially present under the appearances of bread and wine, in order to offer himself in the sacrifice of the Mass and to be received as spiritual food in Holy Communion. It is called Eucharist, or "thanksgiving," because at its institution at the Last Supper, Christ "gave thanks," and by this fact it is the supreme object and act of Christian gratitude to God. Click here for details regarding First Eucharist preparation . Confirmation Confirmation Deepening Our Baptismal Life In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is "sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit" and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world. . . . We receive the message of faith in a deeper and more intensive manner with great emphasis given to the person of Jesus Christ, who asked the Father to give the Holy Spirit to the Church for building up the community in loving service. ~from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults Click here for details regarding Confirmation preparation. Matrimony Matrimony A Union Under God The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant, which is more than a contract. Covenant always expresses a relationship between persons. The marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. The celebration of marriage is also a liturgical act, appropriately held in a public liturgy at church. Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. ~from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults Click here for details regarding Matrimony preparation. Anointing of the Sick Anointing of the Sick Bringing Spiritual Strength During an Illness Anointing of the sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness, especially near the time of death. It is most likely one of the last sacraments one will receive. Anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude (CCC1520). Does a person have to be dying to receive this sacrament? No. The Catechism says, "The anointing of the sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived" (CCC1514). The residents of Syracuse Home at McHarrie Place are anointed twice a year. If you would like to celebrate the Sacrament of Anointing, please call the Parish Office to set an appointment with the Pastor. This means that they must have been in class for their 8th grade year. Students who attend Catholic school are exempt from being in the program for one year prior to registering for the sacrament, however they must attend Year 1 and Year 2 of Sacrament Prep to be eligible for Confirmation. Creating a Family Prayer Space Creating a Prayer Space for Your Home By: Cathy Mackey Does your family have a Prayer Space? A Prayer Space, also known as a Prayer Corner or Sacred Space, is a designated place in your home that serves as your “church away from church.” It’s a place you can go to, alone or as a family, to pray or feel closer to God. The Bonacchi family has shared their Prayer Space with us. Watch this short video of their sweet children praying to the Blessed Mother! Here’s how you can make a Prayer Space in your home: Pick a place in your home where you can have your Prayer Space. Some people pick a windowsill, a corner of a low traffic room, or a space in a special room in the house or apartment. Choose items that are meaningful to your prayer life. I love religious statues and religious art. So, my prayer space would have statues of Jesus and the saints, as well as pictures of He and the saints. I also have a cross and a Bible. I also set up a comfy chair to sit on while I read Scripture, listen to the rosary recited online, or listen to our Director of Music, Ryan Schaffer, read the Stations of the Cross. It’s that simple! You can make your Prayer Space as simple or elaborate as you choose. For more information, click on the link below: https://buildfaith.org/creating-a-prayer-space-at-home/ We’d love to see your Prayer Space! Please send pictures to cmackey@syrdio.org We would love to feature your family’s space on our websites and in our newsletters.
