- Bereavement Support & Funeral Ministries | St. Mary's Baldwinsville
Liturgical Ministries Bereavement Support Ministry Our Bereavement Support Ministry tries to be the compassionate heart and hands of our Lord Jesus. No one can really feel or remove another's pain, but everyone can walk beside and support another who is sorrowful. Those involved in our Bereavement Ministry find that in supporting others, our own faith is nourished and deepened. Volunteers are asked to attend funeral Masses held at St. Mary's to offer support to the family and friends of the deceased. We ask you to prayerfully consider this wonderful ministry. This ministry does not require special training, and the time commitment is one hour on an as-needed basis. Funeral Preparation Team The work done by the volunteers on our Funeral Preparation Team is highly valued by all involved. This ministry requires individuals who are good listeners, are patient, and who can exhibit compassion with those experiencing loss. Members of our Funeral Preparation Team meet with the family members of the deceased to plan the funeral liturgy, perform a brief prayer service during the calling hours if necessary, assist with Funeral liturgy preparation/set up, and attend the Funeral Mass as support to the family. Training is offered for volunteers who wish to join this ministry. Training takes approximately 2-3 hours. Volunteers do not need experience in this role, however they should have good listening skills, compassion, and the ability to lead prayers in a private environment. The time commitment for a Funeral Team member for one Funeral Liturgy is approximately 8 hours over the course of 3-5 days, depending on the needs of the family. Funeral Reception Team T his ministry provides receptions following a Funeral Liturgy for the family and friends of the deceased. Volunteers for this ministry can help in several capacities: Providing food for the reception (typically breakfast, lunch, or snack foods) Assist with set up or clean up (2 hour commitment each; 4 hours if you choose to do both) Assist with serving food at the reception Training for this ministry is provided and takes about 1-2 hours.

Governing Bodies St. Mary's has three consultative bodies that serve to advise the pastor about pastoral issues. Their main purposes are to investigate, reflect, and research conclusions about pastoral matters to recommend to the pastor as appropriate. Members of these committees/councils are appointed by the pastor. Pastoral Council The purpose of the Pastoral Council is to identify the spiritual and temporal needs of the parish community and to encourage members of the parish community to participate in the life of the parish. As a council, the members are responsible for the needs of the Universal Church as well as those of the parish. The members, in consultation with the pastor, staff, and ministerial committees, discuss, research, and through consensus, recommend the direction which the parish should take in matters of the church. The membership consists of both, selected and non-selected members. All members are involved with parish activities and make a commitment to offering a talent or skill to council ministry. Selected members of the Pastoral Council must be confirmed, registered Catholic members of the parish, in good standing. Each member shall serve a three (3) year term. CURRENT PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBERS (until March 2, 2026) Officers: Mark Rossler, Chair Sharon Stack, Vice-Chair Katy Rossler, Secretary Selected Members: Aaron Gloo Kevin Newman Bill McManus Donna Newman Elsie Petersen Marilyn Powell Appointed Member: Sr. Marcia Barry Ex Officio Members: Bishop Douglas Lucia, Pastor Fr. Finance Committee The Finance Committee serves the pastor in an advisory capacity for all financial matters pertaining to the parish. These include: preparation and review of annual operating budgets, short and long-term business plans, capital expenditures, and investment programs and policies. Members of this committee are appointed by the pastor. Appointed members should have background/experience in finance and/or business. Ideally, one member should have a legal background. Liturgy Committee Mass doesn't just happen - it takes planning. The Liturgy Committee plans and coordinates our liturgies throughout the year. The Liturgy Committee is comprised of the pastor, representatives from each liturgical ministry, the director of music ministry, a staff representative, and representatives from certain support ministries. - Children's Liturgy | St. Mary's Baldwinsville
Liturgical Ministries Children's Liturgy of the Word The children’s liturgy takes place on Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass. (Children's liturgy does not take place on select Sundays throughout the year; please check the parish calendar for dates.) Children in grades kindergarten to sixth are welcome to attend. Younger children may attend with the accompaniment of an older sibling if the younger child is well behaved. The purpose of the children’s liturgy is to help bring the Word of God into the hearts of children so that they may come to know, love, and serve God. The children’s liturgy is not a playtime or a time for arts and crafts. It is the Mass. The children listen to the same scriptures that are read in the church, however they are written at a level comprehensible to a child. After the scripture readings, there is an interactive homily where children may ask questions about the readings. Following the homily, the children profess their faith through the Apostles’ Creed, followed by Intercessory Prayers where the children may request prayers for family, friends, and pets in need. The children then return to church to complete the Liturgy of the Eucharist with their families. There are many ways children may participate in the children’s liturgy. Some children may help as lectors, some may hold up our Responsorial Psalm signs, or the crucifix during our prayer petitions. Some may hand out/collect copies of the Apostles’ Creed, and some may participate in skits when we act out the story of the Gospel. A child participating as a lector must be at least in fifth grade or able to read at a fifth grade reading level. If your child would like to participate, he or she may come forward when the children are called at the beginning of Mass. No sign-up or registration is necessary. Adult participation is welcomed. All participating adults must have completed Safe Environment training.
